Shaffer Bend is an undeveloped (no toilets, potable water or electricity) LCRA recreational area on the north side of the upper end of Lake Travis.

During drought years, when Lake Travis is very low, there is running water flowing past the park, and this location is basically the river, with alternating pools and riffles. The banks are sandy with some rock, but you must be careful since some parts of the bank are very soft and you can sink a foot or more into the soft sand. If you fish this place during a drought year, be sure to pay attention to the water level and current. The LCRA releases water though Wirtz Dam, a few miles upstream, at unpredictable times, and a release can cause a sudden increase in water flow and level. You can get trapped on the wrong side of the river or find yourself in some other dangerous predicament.

At normal lake levels (Travis conservation pool level is 680ft) the water is about 20 feet deep at this location.

This is a great location from which to launch kayaks, and you can park within 50 yards of the water.
